The Harvest Within: Lammas, the Wheel of the Year and the Beauty of Becoming

Welcome gentle souls,

Demeter The Goddess of the Harvest

On 1st August we celebrate Lammas, an ancient festival marking the beginning of the harvest. This is when the Earth Mother yields her first abundant grain harvest. She symbolises peak fertility and the bounty of the soil. It’s a time to gather friends and family for a meal featuring seasonal foods, some freshly baked bread as we have had the first wheat harvest.

Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest, she is the corn mother or grain goddess representing fecundity, ripeness and fullness. She is the mother of Persephone, who represents the grain, that falls back into the deep earth hidden and resting throughout the winter, before arriving as new growth in the spring.

This is the deeply respectful nature of Lammas; the understanding that nothing truly stands alone. Everything is part of a cycle. The fullness of the present harvest already contains the heart of the future harvest. The harvest contains the seed, the ending contains the beginning, and the fullness of this moment already holds the promise of what is to come. The cycle continues, the seed returns to the earth, rests in darkness and eventually rises again.

The cyclical nature of the world is both deeply humbling and profoundly beautiful. Isn’t that wonderfully poetic?

What are you harvesting?

We often think of harvest as something that happens in the fields. Golden wheat, heavy fruit, vegetables pulled from the earth. But perhaps there are other kinds of harvest too.

Perhaps harvest is the confidence that has slowly grown within you. The lesson you have finally understood. The boundary you have learned to hold. The relationship that has deepened. The dream that has begun to take shape.

Perhaps it is the courage to leave something behind that no longer nourishes you.

We are always growing something, whether we realise it or not.

Just as the earth does not ask the seed to become a flower ovenight, perhaps we could learn to honour the quiet, unseen seasons of our own becoming.

A moment to pause and gather.

As the wheel of the year turns towards the first harvest, take a moment to pause.

What has grown within you since the beginning of the year?

What are you proud of?

What lesson has life offered you?

What have you had the courage to release?

There is no need to have everything figured out. The beauty of the harvest is that it reminds us that growth is cyclical. There is the season of blooming, of abundance, of retreat and of quietude. All of them work together to create.

Within every harvest, there is always a seed.

A promise of something yet to come.

I saw this little fellow after Hannah and I had our Harvest Festival meeting. I feel very privileged to have seen him. A gorgeous hare, a lucky one, a symbol of transformation, new beginnings and intuition.

Until next time,

Blessings,

Stephanie

May your light shine brightly.
